Sexto Elemento Dulce Orange 2019
Sexto Elemento is a tiny production estate with a key focus on one of Spain's underrated grape varietals - Bobal. Rafa Lopez took over the family farm in 2000. Instead of selling their fruit to the cooperatives like generations before him, Rafa decided to produce a powerful & elegant style of Bobal, as compared to the mediocre quality of the cooperatives
Scarce rainfall, hot summers, and bitter cold winters help to create a perfect situation for the thick-skinned Bobal variety, and at Rafa's mere 6-hectare estate, he only yields 1-1.5 kg per vine on average. An annual production of just 10,000 bottles makes these exclusive wines of Sexto Elemento a cult-style production, with the power and elegance to be one of the most coveted in all of Spain.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Macabeo from Utiel-Requena in Valencia, Spain.
Taste Profile: Due to the high sugar content in the grapes and must, the wine has a sweet wine character with sweet notes reminiscent of dried apricots, baked apples with cinnamon, but also aromas of mountain herbs that make the wine taste fresher. The result is this elegant, subtle and above all original, natural, sweet wine
Winemaking Process: The fruit was late harvested & left to ferment with their skins for no more and no less than 250 days. After this period, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels for 12 months of aging. Different techniques have been used to elaborate this special version, first from the orange wine due to its prolonged maceration with skins, then the Tokaji method, as the renowned Hungarian sweet wines are made by adding botrytised grapes , as well as a prolonged ageing in barrels with soleras of older sweet wines such as Fondillón, which will provide more complexity to the bottled wine
