Meyer-Nakel Zwalu Bordeaux Blend 2019
Werner Näkel worked as a winemaker in both Portugal and South Africa. Back in 1996, after his first trip to the Cape, he decided to make wine there as well. His granddaughters continuing this tradition with enthusiasm today – not least as a welcome excuse to escape the German winter every now and then. With "Zwalu," the Afrikaans word for "new beginning," the first German-African wine was launched after the end of the apartheid regime with the help of oenologist Neill Ellis.
Grape Varietals & Region: The Zwalu is a Bordeaux-style blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Shiraz, and 5% Cabernet Franc from Stellenbosch, South Africa
Taste Profile: This wine is characterized by Cabernet-typical paprika notes, licorice, and pepper, as well as intense aromas of blackberry and hints of vanilla. A full-bodied wine with good structure, smooth tannins, and a complex finish.
Winemaking Process: The grapes are harvested by hand and transported to the winery in small crates. The harvest is carefully processed. After 18-24 days of maceration, malolactic fermentation takes place. The wine ages for 26 months in French barriques
