In the 1600s our hills were used as an outpost on the two-day trek from Cape Town to Stellenbosch. They were named “Bottelary” after a ship’s pantry. In 1946, our great-grandfather traded in the stark Karoo landscape for the exciting promise these hills had to offer. Today, it’s been our home for four generations. This blend celebrates our region’s harvest made by real farmers.
This stylish and powerful red blend is our all-rounder with notes of dark berries and cherries. The palate boasts richness, concentration and dense fruit.
Pronounced and dark-fruited aromas, with blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry at the core, supported by ripe plum and mulberry. Subtle layers of tobacco leaf, earthy spice, cocoa, pencil shavings and a hint of black pepper would add complexity, echoing its Bottelary granite soils and time in French and Hungarian oak.
On the palate its dry, full-bodied and richly textured, showing dense flavours of dark berries and cherries framed by firm but ripe tannins and fresh, medium+ acidity. Notes of spice, tobacco, dark chocolate and a light savoury, earthy grip would shape a long, warming finish, suggesting the wine can comfortably develop in bottle over the next several years.
