Auntsfield Estate Single Vineyard Rose 2024
The original cellars & vineyards of David Hern, Marlborough's & Auntsfield's founding winemaker, are the same estate that the modern Auntsfield is on today. The current varietals planted have a shared ancestry with the original vineyards, and the Cowley family makes it a priority to act as guardians of this history.
The Southern Valleys is a sub region within Marlborough where the climate is cooler and drier. With its mix of high mineral Greywacke rock and old low fertility Loess clay soils, the Southern Valleys is regarded for its riper styles of wine with more structure, texture and minerality.
The Auntsfield vineyard covers 65 hectares and is planted in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Unlike many Marlborough vineyards, Pinot Noir is Auntsfield’s most planted variety, and is particularly suited to the old clay hillsides of Auntsfield.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Pinot Noir from Marlborough, New Zealand. Coming from the Auntsfield Estate, where the vines are planted on ancient Greywacke rock and Loess clay soils
Taste Profile: Pale salmon. Fragrant lifted aromas of strawberry, strawberry and rock melon, lifted with candied citrus rind and dried rose petal. The palate is refreshing with a lovely density showing white peach, floral notes and citrus zest. The finish offers lifted spice, salinity and fresh watermelon lightness. The wine strikes a balance between attractive fruit, taught phenolics and mineral acidity
Winemaking Process: The fruit was whole bunch pressed, and this gentle extraction removed the lightly colored Pinot Noir juice off skins before grippy phenolics, resulting in an elegant and light style of rosé. The wine was kept on yeast lees with stirring for three months. The light lees providing a softening and slipperiness to this ethereal wine.
